What Are Nano Fertilizers and How Are They Classified?

A nano fertilizer is a type of fertilizer which has nutrients encapsulated within nanomaterial. They are manufactured this way for controlled release and slow diffusion into the soil for optimum results. The nano-particles comprise one or more nutrients and are more efficient and cost-effective than traditional fertilizers. This is because it reduces the need for frequent application and reduces the amount of fertilizer used. The nanomaterials in these fertilizers have a high surface area-to-volume ratio which makes it ideal for holding and releasing nutrients. Hence, many farmers choose this modern agriculture alternative. The most beneficial feature of nano fertilizers is their controlled-release system. Since it has this feature, it is more efficient than traditional fertilizers.

Classification of Nano Fertilizers

Nano fertilizers can be classified based on their action, nutrient composition, and consistency. These are:

  1. Action-Based

These nano fertilizers can be further categorized into five types, namely, controlled-release, targeted delivery, plant growth-stimulating, and water and nutrient loss controlling. The controlled-release nano-fertilizer is potentially applied to crops, including rice, wheat, corn, and soybeans.

  1. Nutrient-Based

The nutrient-based nano fertilizers enhance nutrient availability, uptake, and utilization in plants. They help improve yields in agriculture by offering a unique advantage due to their ability to allow targeted applications. They are further classified into five types which include inorganic, organic, hybrid, and nutrient-loaded nano-fertilizers. The inorganic nano fertilizers include metals, and metalloids, which provide nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

  1. Consistency-Based

These include surface-coated and nano carrier-based technologies that reduce nutrient loss and minimize environmental impact. Hence, it is an eco-friendly agriculture practice to use these fertilizers. They are further classified into surface-coated nano fertilizers, synthetic polymer-coated, biological product-coated, and nano carrier-based fertilizers.

Nano fertilizers have emerged as a positive solution to all the challenges faced by farmers who were using traditional fertilizers such as urea, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, mono ammonium phosphate, etc. Many farmers are now switching to nano fertilizers which offer higher efficiency and reduced environmental impacts. It is highly recommended to buy nano fertilizers from trusted sellers with positive customer reviews and ratings.
